Grief Counseling & Support
Hospice services have long been associated with providing quality, home-based care to individuals coping with terminal illness, but Preferred Hospice provides additional supportive services for families coping with the death of a loved one. Composed, empathetic reassurance is critical in helping patients and families in the last hours of living. Care does not end until our team has helped the family with their grief reactions and helped those with complicated grief to get supplemental care.
Grief counseling and support from our nurses, social workers and chaplains help assure the long-term mental and physical well-being of survivors of all ages by helping individuals adjust to their loss and express their feelings.
Youth Grief Support
Preferred Hospice has staff available to offer grief support for individuals, schools or other groups who may be experiencing loss. Our Bereavement Coordinator has specific services geared for children, which are presented in a loving and supportive way.
Book, Coloring Book and Crayon Set
Preferred Hospice Director of Operations, Sonya Newton has developed two companion pieces to help explain the natural process of dying to children. The book “Chance's Journey” follows the life of a goose named Chance, as he journeys through life and experiences loss along the way. The book not only increases the understanding of the dying process, but also explains the importance of being with our loved ones at the end of their lives. The goal for this book is to help initiate conversations between children and their parents.
The Coloring Book “Chance's Journey” reiterates the companion book's message with bold line drawings perfect for coloring and discussing. The coloring book allows children to enjoy a soothing activity while giving them an opportunity to explore their feelings about the death of a loved one.
The Book and Coloring Set is available to anyone who would like help in explaining the dying process to children. Please call our office at 417-581-4968 for more information.
Chance the Goose Hand Puppet
Our specially designed Goose Hand Puppet is available for Grief Counselors and Bereavement Coordinators to use with children to explain the natural dying process.
It is crucial that children who are suffering through loss be allowed to express how they are truly feeling. Chance the Goose encourages children to express their feelings in a beneficial way. Many times it is more comfortable for children to share their feelings with Chance than to talk directly to an adult. Use of the hand puppet can help the counselor and the child create stories that aid the healing process. Please call our office at 417-581-4968 to arrange for one of our Grief Counselors to speak with you or your group.
